Celia Geraedts on the Magic of Indigo
The New Haberdashery will be transformed into a denim studio on Saturday 8 and Sunday 9 July. On Saturday 8 July, Celia Geraedts, the founder of Blue Print Amsterdam & Boro*Studio, will give two presentations and demonstrations on 'the magic of indigo'. On Sunday 9 July participants can work with denim themselves.
8 July 2017 12:00 - 14:00
Celia Geraedts will give two presentations with a demonstration. Participants can choose to attend one or both presentations (at a reduced fee).
Indigo as a natural substance
12:00 - 14:00
In this first presentation, Geraedts will tell more about the different types of indigo and its applications. What is the history behind this natural substance and what are the myths surrounding it? She also adresses the relationship of indigo with the denim industry. In the final hour of the presentation, participants will come into contact with indigo, literally, as they will go home with blue hands.
Indigo around the world
14:30 - 16:30
In this second presentation, Geraedts will introduce the participants to the different types of indigo around the world (African, Japanese, Central American and Indian). What are the stories around indigo and how does the substance differ around the world? In addition, the presentation deals with the different techniques that are applied on indigo in different parts of the world. Participants will get an explanation on the shibori technique and learn how to apply this technique themselves.
Celia Geraedts
Geraedts has been working in the denim industry for the last eleven years, among others for Levi's, where her passion for indigo only increased. In 2011 she travelled to Japan to learn more about the art of painting indigo. On returning to Holland, she started Blue Print Amsterdam, a studio in which old painting and printing crafts are used in innovative ways on (textile) products.
